Log On problems...

I've installed MSDE w/no problem - but what username & password do I use (well, I know what password since I specified it in the *.ini file before install) - but username?
Cassinni or IIS web server - I can't log on and do anything w/MSDE. Do I have to edit something w/a username, make one up, use one from that's built into windows? I've tried both settings _ windows authentication and SQL Server - but nothing. Any sugge
stions?
The default user ID is "sa". If you set the server to use Windows Authentication, you cannot logon with this user ID - at least via applications. This ID must be given a strong password. You can do that with the osql utility provided with MSDE.
If this is MSDE2000A, read the Jan 2004 version of the Readme2000A.htm that comes with the bundle. Also get a hold of the updates to this file.
I also suggest the SQL Server Books Online help file. This is downloadable at no charge and must be installed.

Log file increase very fast

I installed SQL server 2000 on one NT4.0 server and one Win2000 server. The
SQL server on NT4.0 is working fine. It's log file is always less than 5MB.
But on Win2000 I think there are some problems because the log file is
increasing very fast, now it is 25000MB.The two SQL server almost do same
work and configuration are same. Any help will be appreciated.Charms,
Have you checked the database settings on both servers . You may have one
server set to a higher recovery model.
I hope this helps

Log Explorer vs. ApexSQL Log vs. SQL Log-Rescue

Opinions?

I've installed all three to try'em out and they all seem to be working
so far, more or less.

Log Explorer has given me a couple of errors but I started over and
continued OK.

ApexSQL Log squawked about "redo for delete cannot be generated for
tables lacking clustered index". Huh? What the...? We have lots of
tables without a clustered index.

I read some reports in Red-Gate's technical support forum about their
product actually bringing down SQL Server. That did not inspire
confidence.

All three install some server-side components like extended stored
proc's which I'm not crazy about and I think all three are server or
instance licensed (does anyone actually purchase more than one license
when it seems like you can easily move any tran log to be analyzed to
the server the product is installed on?). I don't think I'd want to
install any of them on a Production server, at least one that I'm
responsible for!

Thanks,

Probably the people at ApexSQL are like me: they think that every table
should have a clustered index.

If nothing else, fragmentation is easier to keep in check, if you have
a clustered index.
